Fecal Calprotectin
A marker of intestinal inflammation.
- Marker of intestinal inflammation
- Simple stool collection
- Useful for monitoring treatment
A stool test that measures calprotectin, a protein released by immune cells when there is inflammation in the intestinal lining. It is a sensitive marker that helps distinguish inflammatory conditions from functional disorders, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
What calprotectin is
Calprotectin is a protein found in neutrophils, immune cells that migrate to the intestine when there is inflammation. The greater the inflammation of the lining, the more calprotectin is eliminated in the stool.
That's why the test works as a thermometer of intestinal inflammation, in a simple, non-invasive way.
What the result may indicate
- Normal values suggest no significant intestinal inflammation, common in functional disorders
- High values indicate inflammation and may appear in inflammatory bowel diseases, infections and other conditions
- Repeated measurements show how the intestinal lining responds to treatment
How we use the result
The test complements the assessment of digestive complaints and helps define the nutrition strategy. High values are referred for medical investigation, and monitoring over time shows how the intestinal lining responds to dietary changes, gut modulation and treatment.
Important: Some medications, such as anti-inflammatories, can raise calprotectin. Report all medications you take when the test is recommended.
